Women's Lacrosse also Loses Home Finale

DANVILLE, Va. (April 19, 2001) - The third time was a charm for North Carolina Wesleyan Thursday morning; the Bishops eliminated Shenandoah from the Dixie Conference baseball tournament at Dan Daniel Park in Danville with a 10-3 victory.

Shenandoah (17-13) swept NC Wesleyan (16-18) two weeks ago with 16-2 and 5-2 victories at Bridgeforth Field in Winchester. However, that was not to be the case in the team's third meeting of the season.

The Bishops jumped all over starter Jeremy Schutt (Annandale, Va./Prince George's CC) for four runs on four hits in the top of the first inning. NCWC wasted no time in getting to Schutt (0-1); Chancellor Bishop led off with a triple and scored one batter later on Pat Bullard's home run.

Coach Justin Cronk's club was able to answer back with one run in the bottom of the first but that would be all SU would be able to muster until freshman Tyler Daniel (Richmond, Va./J.R. Tucker) produced the final two runs of the game with a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Hornets run in the first came when third baseman Jake Fielder (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) plated Adam Beckerink (Lakewood, N.Y./Jamestown CC) from second with a single. Beckerink reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second when Tony Canterna (Linthicum, Md./Anne Arundel CC) singled.

John Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) was the only player with more than one hit. He was 2 for 4.

Schutt lasted just two innings on the mound. He gave up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits before giving way to Chris Kees (Gore, Va./James Wood) three batters into the third. Kees struck out five in seven innings of work.

Shenandoah completes its regular season this Tuesday with a road game at St. Mary's (Md.) College.

Women's Lacrosse

WINCHESTER, Va. - The women's lacrosse team also failed to pick up a victory Thursday as Hollins College defeated SU 17-5 in the Hornets home finale.

Hollins (6-6) jumped out to a 7-3 lead by halftime and then broke the game open with 10 goals in the second half over Shenandoah (0-7).

Freshman Sharon Sparwasser (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) led SU with three goals and an assist while Megan Tupper (Bowie, Md./Anne Arundel CC) and Angela Daniel (Charlottesville, Va./William Monroe) chipped in with one goal apiece.

The Hornets are in action again this weekend at the Dixie Conference Tournament. SU will face top seeded Greensboro in Saturday's 2:00 contest at Christopher Newport University.
