– On the strength of two runner-up and two third place finishes in
singles, the SU women’s tennis team finished a best ever third at
the Dixie Conference championships this past weekend.
Senior
Jen McNeal (Verona,
Va./Fort
Defiance)
earned All-Dixie honors for the second time in her career with a
runner-up performance at No.1 singles. McNeal also paired with Wendy
Legge (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) to reach the finals at No. 1
doubles; they were defeated by the 2001 Rolex doubles national
championship duo of Elena Blanina and Carla Simpson from Methodist
College
8-0. Blanina, the Rolex singles national champion as well, defeated
McNeal 6-1, 6-1 in the singles competition.
All-Conference
is determined by the place in the tournament championship; all
winners are considered first team and runners-up second team. SU has
had three first team All-Dixie singles selections for the women:
Lauren John (No. 1) in 1995, Carla Gorman (No. 2) in 1996 and McNeal
(No. 1) in 1999.
Senior
Laura Turek (Littlestown,
Pa./Littlestown)
and sophomore Jessica Padgett (Cincinnati,
Ohio/Ross)
both earned third place finishes with victories in the consolation
finals on Sunday. Turek defeated Erin Williams from Ferrum 9-7 at
No. 4 while Padgett was an 8-1 winner over Averett’s Courtney
Carrington at No. 6.
The
men stayed at the same sixth place spot they held after day one;
freshman Alex Bhaskarla (Hagerstown,
Md./North
Hagerstown
led Shenandoah with a team best fourth place finish at No. 5
singles.
No. 3
James Ham (Burke,
Va./NoVa
CC), No. 5 Tim Dunford (Pembroke, Va./New
River CC) and No. 6 Will Rice (Virginia
Beach,
Va./Ocean
Lakes) had previously clinched fifth place for the men.
