Women’s Soccer

WINCHESTER, Va. – The SU women’s soccer team opened its 2002 season Saturday morning with a tough, 6-0 loss to Division II Davis & Elkins College.

Shenandoah (0-1) fell behind early as Adelina Abreu tallied an unassisted goal just two minutes into the contest. However, the Hornets refused to fold; they had three excellent scoring opportunities in the next 10 minutes but were unable to find the back of the Senators net.

D&E (1-0) then finished off the hosts by scoring five more goals, including four prior to intermission.

The women are right back in action with a Sunday contest against Mary Baldwin. Game time is 11:30 .

Men’s Soccer

WINCHESTER, Va. – The SU men’s soccer team also was unable to get a win in its first game of the 2002 season on Saturday afternoon; Mary Washington used a goal early in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and take the 2-1 victory.

After junior Akmed Mansaray (Alexandria , Va./TC Williams) tied the game for Shenandoah (0-1) with his goal off of an assist from Jesse Fullerton (Catharpin, Va./Stonewall Jackson) in the 55th minute, MWC (1-0) answered back five minutes later.

The Eagles scored what proved to be the winning goal when Marc Salotti found himself alone in front of SU keeper Tom Malinosky (Clearwater, Fla./Clearwater Catholic) and the ball at his feet. Salotti calmly deposited his shot past the diving Malinosky, giving the visitors a lead they would not relinquish. For Salotti, it was his second unassisted goal of the afternoon. He scored the opening goal of the game in the 5th minute.

Shenandoah saw its best chance to score following Salotti’s second tally thwarted by MWC keeper Liam Garland in the 69th minute. Garland took an intentional handball just outside the 18-yard box in a successful effort to knock away a lead pass to SU forward Will Scott. Garland drew a red card on the play, but the Hornets were not able to capitalize on the man advantage over the final 21 minutes.

Women's Volleyball

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The SU women's volleyball team came back to finish third at the Lynchburg College Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

After defeating Meredith College 3-1 (19-30, 30-18, 30-26, 30-22) in the morning's first match, the Hornets (3-1) defeated St. Mary's of Maryland 3-2 (18-30, 30-25, 30-27, 24-30, 15-7) in the consolation final.

This is the highest finish tournament finish for the women's volleyball program since joining the Dixie Conference in 1993.

Senior Carly Higbee (Catlett, Va./Liberty) and sophomore Hannah Williams (Salem, Va./Glenvar) led Shenandoah in Saturday's two victories while freshman Caroline Crocker (Stanardsville, Va./William Monroe) was once again a force from the service line. Higbee had 37 digs in the two matches, Williams 25 kills and Crocker keyed the Meredith victory with a school record 13 service aces. For Crocker, it was a record setting performance for the second time in as many days. She helped Coach Ellie Tanner's club achieve a split on Friday with 12 service aces against Dixie rival NC Wesleyan.
