WINCHESTER,
Va. (September 2, 2001) - The SU men's soccer
team won its season opening game for the first
time in three seasons Sunday afternoon as the
Hornets defeated Goucher College 4-1.
Shenandoah
(1-0) took a 2-0 lead into the halftime
intermission as senior Guy Auguste (Chesapeake,
Va./Virginia Wesleyan) had an unassisted tally in
the 37th minute and freshman Luis
Collantes (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams) converted
a feed from sophomore Stephan Hasson (Herndon, Va./Oakton)
four minutes later.
After Goucher (0-1)
cut the deficit to one with a goal nine minutes
into the second half, Collantes gave his squad a
measure of breathing room by slipping a shot just
inside the right post in the 74th
minute. Sophomore Manuel Barcia (Fairfax, Va./Oakton)
then capped the scoring with a penalty kick goal
with less than two minutes to play. Barcia was
awarded the PK when he was taken down in the box.
Junior Tom
Malinosky (Clearwater, Fla./Clearwater Catholic)
stopped three of eight shots to earn the victory
in the goal.
