WINCHESTER, Va. (September
4, 2001) - The SU men's soccer received five
points from its TC Williams High School
connection Tuesday afternoon to key a 4-2 victory
over Eastern Mennonite University. SU (2-0) is
now halfway to last season's win total with two
victories in as many outings.
Shenandoah jumped on the
Royals (1-2) just five minutes into the contest
when freshman Luis Collantes (Alexandria, Va./TC
Williams) scored his third goal of the young
season by converting a header feed from sophomore
Ben Scott (Elkins, W. Va./Nitro). Five minutes
later sophomore Manuel Barcia (Fairfax, Va./Oakton)
made it 2-0 in favor of the hosts by ripping a
shot just under the crossbar from 30 yards out.
Scott then added what
proved to be the winning goal with just 30
seconds remaining in the first half. The forward
took a long through pass from freshman James
Ketevong (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams) and
threaded a shot past EMU keeper Neal Lewis and
into the right panel of the net.
After the Royals scored
goals in the 70th and 78th
minutes to cut the deficit to one at 3-2,
sophomore Akmed Mansaray (Alexandria, Va./TC
Williams) added an insurance goal in the 85th
minute.
SU out shot EMU 18-7 in the
contest. Lewis stopped four shots for the
visitors and Tom Malinosky (Clearwater, Fla./Clearwater
Catholic) two for the Hornets.

Women's Volleyball
BRIDGEWATER, Va. (September
4, 2001) - The women's volleyball team was not as
fortunate as the men's soccer team as the Hornets
opened both the Ellie Tanner era and the 2001
season with a 3-0 (15-30, 15-30, 16-30) loss at
Bridgewater College.
Senior Brandy Kuykendall (Winchester,
Va./James Wood) led SU (0-1) in the match, which
was played using the 30 point International Rally
Scoring Format. Kuykendall had 12 assists and
nine digs while freshman Jenny Gray (Sumerduck,
Va./Liberty) added six kills. Fellow freshman Aly
Benton (Bunker Hill, W. Va./Musselman) chipped in
with two blocks solo and a block assist.
Tanner's squad will be in
action again this weekend at the Washington &
Lee Tournament.
