BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Shenandoah University football team ran into a buzz saw Saturday afternoon in the form of the No. 6 in the nation Bridgewater College Eagles. BC failed to show the second year Hornets any sympathy, rolling up a school record 545 yards on their way to a 48-0 shutout victory.

BC (2-0) scored two touchdowns in each of the first three quarters and added a final score with 10 seconds remaining in the contest to defeat SU (0-2). The Eagles were dominant in the game, as senior running back Davon Cruz gained 123 yards on 15 carries and quarterback Jason Lutz threw for 101 more on nine completions in 11 attempts.

Coach Walter Barr’s Hornets were never able to get untracked; sophomore quarterback Josh Copp (Winchester, Va./James Wood) accounted for most of the offense with 42 yards passing on four completions.

Perhaps the lone bright spot came from junior punter Ben Willard (Trumansburg, N.Y./Potomac State). Willard had 11 punts for a 43.0 yard average and also uncorked a school record 52 yarder in the second quarter.

Freshmen linebackers Jesse Hardesty (Broadway, Va./Broadway) and Eddie Freeman (Ruther Glen, Va./Caroline) had nine and eight tackles, respectively, while Freeman also intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter.

LEXINGTON, Va. – The women’s volleyball team came closer to achieving its first win of the season Saturday afternoon only to fall short in two contests at the Washington & Lee Invitational. SU was eliminated from championship play in the tournament with a 3-1 (30-21, 28-30, 21-30, 27-30) loss to St. Mary’s of Maryland and a 3-2 (31-33, 17-30, 30-28, 30-28, 13-15) loss to Christopher Newport University.

Freshman Jenny Gray (Sumerduck, Va./Liberty) had 11 kills and 15 digs in the St. Mary’s match, while junior Carly Higbee (Catlett, Va./Liberty) added 12 kills.

Senior Brandy Kuykendall (Winchester, Va./James Wood) also played well with 38 assists and 15 digs.

Gray, Higbee and Kuykendall also played major roles in the CNU match with Gray setting a new career high with 15 kills. Higbee added 12 for the second match in a row and Kuykendall matched her assist and dig totals from the morning match.

Men’s Soccer

WINCHESTER, Va. – The men’s soccer team was unable to continue its winning ways Saturday afternoon as the Hornets dropped a heartbreaking, 2-1 overtime decision to Marymount University in the both team’s opening game of the Shenandoah Shootout.

After Marymount (2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 5th minute on an unassisted goal from Adrian Sossa, SU (2-1) tied the game 19 minutes later when sophomore Akmed Mansaray (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams) stole the ball and rifled a shot in from eight yards out.

The two teams then held each other scoreless throughout the rest of regulation and the first 10 minute sudden victory overtime period. With just three minutes remaining in the second and final overtime period,

Forward Edwin Beltran took an outlet pass from keeper Brian Craddock and found himself all alone with SU keeper Tom Malinosky (Clearwater, Fla./Clearwater Catholic). Beltran slipped his shot past an onrushing Malinosky and into the open goal.

A complete box score can be found at http://www.su.edu/athletics/msoc/2001/0908012.htm

Chowan defeated Gallaudet 8-0 in the opening game of the Shootout. The Braves will face Marymount Sunday at 1, with SU taking Gallaudet at 3:00.
