– Coach Rob Kulton’s squad came 10 minutes from a championship
Sunday afternoon on day two of the Shenandoah Shootout, but was
forced to settle for a co-championship as Penn State – Altoona
battled the Hornets to a 1-1 tie.
SU
(1-1-1) led the championship 1-0 on a Jesse Fullerton (Catharpin,
Va./Stonewall Jackson) goal in the 51st minute, but saw PSU-Altoona
(3-0-2) tie the game 29 minutes later when Kamah Duwana ripped a
shot from just to the left of Hornets keeper Tom Malinosky
(Clearwater, Fla./Clearwater Catholic) into the top right corner of
the net.
Shenandoah had a number of
excellent scoring chances during both the final 10 minutes of
regulation and the 20 minute sudden victory overtime, but could not
find the back of the net. The Hornets outshot the Lions 23 for the
game, including 4-1 during overtime.
The two teams were then
declared co-champions after tying the game and being tied at one in
the first tiebreaking criteria, goal differential.
Catholic
University captured third place with a 2-0 victory over Thiel
College in the consolation game.
