Women’s Soccer

WINCHESTER, Va.– The SU women’s soccer team opened its Dixie Conference slate in style Wednesday afternoon as the Hornets defeated Ferrum College 7-2.

The victory snaps a three game losing streak for the Hornets (2-4, 1-0) and was the first for the squad over Ferrum since a 4-0 victory on October 28, 1998 . The Dixie win over the Lady Panthers (0-2, 0-1) was also the first for the women’s soccer team over a Dixie Conference opponent other than Averett University since a 1-0 win over Greensboro College on October 2, 1999.

After the two teams played a scoreless first 24 minutes, Shenandoah seized control of the game with three goals in a four minute span midway through the first period. Sophomore Jillian Erb ( Reisterstown , Md. /Western Tech) opened the scoring with a tally off an assist from Karen Hild ( Ellicott City , Md. /Centennial) in the 25th minute, Heather Lethbridge (Belvidere, N.J./Belvidere) scored four minutes later and then Laura Wipf (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) netted what proved to be the game winner when she redirected a feed from Lethbridge 26 seconds after Lethbridge’ goal.

Ferrum answered back with on a penalty kick goal from Carrie Conques in the 33rd minute, but the Hornets scored four of the five goals in the second half to secure the victory.

Erb finished the day with two goals and two assists while Lethbridge added one and one.
