Football
WINCHESTER,
Va. – Shenandoah University returned to the athletic fields
on Saturday night for the first time since the terrorist
attacks with a 37-6 football victory over Gallaudet
University. The win came before 2930 fans at Shenandoah’s
brand new facility, Shentel Stadium.
University
officials incorporated a moment of silence to honor the
victims of Tuesday’s tragedy and also included a color guard
to present the Stars and Stripes.
Shenandoah
(1-2) wasted little time in christening its new stadium as
Anthony McGhee (Reston, Va./South Lakes) took a handoff and
raced 61 yards untouched on the Hornets second possession of
the contest. Sophomore Morgan Linkenauger (Lenexa,
Va./Lafayette)
made the conversion, one of five he made in the game, to make
the score 7-0.
Shenandoah
turned the game into a rout by scoring three more touchdowns
in the first half to take a 28-0 lead into halftime.
Quarterback Wayne Hogwood (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) plunged
in from the 1 on a sneak to make it 14-0 and then hooked up
with tight end Warren Korpanty (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison)
on a 19-yard scoring strike with 12:26 to play in the second.
Sophomore
Will Drew (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) completed the scoring in
the first half with a 14-yard run to a cap a five play, 33
yard drive with 5:49 left.
After
Dennis Robart (Cuyahoga Falls,
O./Potomac State) made it 35-0 with a 1 yard run early in the
third, Gallaudet (0-2) averted the shutout by returning a
fumble 92 yards for a score.
With
Shenandoah threatening to score again with a 3rd
and 5 from the Gallaudet 6, Ty Hubbard scooped up an SU fumble
at his own eight and raced 92 yards for the visitors only
score of the day.
McGhee
all rushers with eight carries for 109 yards while Robart had
18 carries for 76 yards. SU went to the air only six times in
the contest; Hogwood was 2 for 4 for 28 yards and first
touchdown of his career. Shenandoah piled up a season high 419
yards and held the Bison to just 99 of their own (95 rushing).

Bridge) scored the first of his three goals of the game when
he flicked home a header
from right in front of the Braves (1-6, 0-2) goal. Sophomore
