Men’s Soccer Wins Again

Football Falls to Ferrum, Volleyball Splits

Men’s Soccer

WINCHESTER , Va. – The men’s soccer team achieved one of the biggest wins in recent history Saturday afternoon with a 4-1 blowout victory over Salisbury University .

Shenandoah (6-1) wasted little time in jumping on the Sea Gulls (5-2) as junior Will Scott ( Chesapeake , Va. /Great Bridge) took a feed from Jesse Fullerton ( Catharpin , Va. /Stonewall Jackson) and headed home a goal from right in front only 48 seconds into the contest.

After Salisbury tied it in the 20th minute, SU added two goals from Luis Collantes ( Alexandria , Va. /TC Williams) sandwiched around a tally from Akmed Mansaray ( Alexandria , Va. /TC Williams) in the second half to secure the victory. In addition to his two goals, Collantes also assisted on Mansaray’s conversion.

Junior Tom Malinosky ( Clearwater , Fla. /Clearwater Catholic) made four saves in earning his fifth victory of the fall.

The Hornets are now off until Thursday when they travel to the nation’s capital to take on Catholic University . Game time is 4:00 .


Football

WINCHESTER , Va. – The football team once again got hit by the turnover bug as the Hornets turned the ball over four times in a 35-7 loss to Ferrum in the squad’s Dixie Conference opener before 2412 fans at Shentel Stadium Saturday night.

Shenandoah (1-3, 0-1) lost two of three fumbles and also threw two interceptions as Ferrum improved to (2-2, 2-0 Dixie ) with the dominating victory.

The Panthers rolled up 559 yards of offense in the win, including 493 on the ground. Sophomore Freddie Little had 147 yards rushing on 13 carries while quarterback Phil Hairston added another 108 yards on 16 rushes. Hairston also passed for another 46 yards and a touchdown on three completions.

Shenandoah scored its only touchdown with 1:12 to play in the third quarter when sophomore LJ Curry ( Odenton , Md. /Meade) recovered a Wayne Hogwood ( Arlington , Va. / Wakefield ) fumble in the end zone. Hogwood took the ball from the 10 to the 1 on the play before losing the ball as he stretched for the end zone. Curry was able to fight off a host of Ferrum defenders to recover the ball and score his first touchdown of the season in the process.

EJ Thomas had touchdown runs of 21 and 10 yards for the Panthers while Grizzly Parks set a Shentel Stadium record with a 78 yard touchdown jaunt to close out the first half scoring for the Panthers.

Anthony McGhee (Reston, Va./South Lakes) led SU with 52 yards rushing on nine carries with Dennis Robart (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Potomac State) adding another 42 yards on 10 carries.

Women’s Volleyball

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The women’s volleyball team achieved its first conference win in nearly two years Saturday afternoon when the Hornets came back to salvage a split of a Dixie Conference doubleheader at Greensboro with a 3-0 (30-16, 30-21, 30-16) sweep of Chowan College.

SU (2-7, 1-2) had lost to NC Wesleyan 3-1 (30-12, 17-30, 28-30, 26-30) in the opening match of the afternoon. The win over the Lady Braves is the first in the Dixie since SU defeated Methodist 3-1 on October 30, 1999 in Fayetteville , N.C.

Freshman Aly Benton ( Bunker Hill , W. Va./Musselman) led the Hornets with 13 kills and four block assists. Senior Brandy Kuykendall ( Winchester , Va./James Wood) had 23 assists and seven digs while freshman Jenny Gray ( Sumerduck , Va. / Liberty ) also had seven kills.

Kuykendall also played well in the NC Wesleyan match; she had 20 assists and 10 digs to lead SU in both categories. Junior Carly Higbee ( Catlett , Va. / Liberty ) had a team high eight kills.

Shenandoah is action again on Tuesday when they host Ferrum College in a Dixie Conference match.


Men’s and Women’s Tennis

WINCHESTER , Va. – The women’s tennis team opened its fall season Saturday afternoon by winning the SU Fall Classic over Ferrum, Shepherd and the University of the District of Columbia. Freshman Monica Ramallo ( Arlington , Va. /Washington – Lee) led SU by winning the No. 1 singles flight. Ramallo defeated Renee Campbell from UDC 8-6 in the opening match and then Becky Soteres from Ferrum 8-4 in the final.

Shenandoah also took championships at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles flights. Senior Laura Turek ( Littlestown , Pa. /Littlestown) won 8-3 and 8-2 to win No. 5 and Alison Campbell was an 8-1 winner in the No. 6 flight final after receiving a bye in the semi-final round.

Junior Wendy Legge (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) finished third at No. 2 singles and also combined with Sakiko Horikawa to finish third at No. 2 doubles.

The men finished fourth in their round-robin tournament. Alex Bhascarla and Will Rice ( Virginia Beach , Va. /Ocean Lakes) led Coach Brandon Padgett’s club with third place performances at  No. 3 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
