WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah

Football
FERRUM,
Va.
– The SU football team put forth its best effort of the 2002
season Saturday afternoon, but came up just short in its Dixie
Conference opener as
Ferrum
College
rallied for a 21-14 victory.
Shenandoah (0-4, 0-1) held a 14-7
halftime lead after Anthony McGhee (Reston
,
Va./South
Lakes) scored his second touchdown of the day at the
2:39
mark of the second. McGhee
gave the Hornets their first lead of the 2002 season when he snared
a 3rd down pass from quarterback Wayne Hogwood (Arlington,
Va./Wakefield)
just before he knocked over the front endzone pylon.
McGhee knotted the score at 7 for
SU at the 10:33
mark of the second when he took a fourth down pitch and waltzed into
the endzone untouched.
Unfortunately for Coach Paul Barnes
and his club, Ferrum staged a comeback in the final 30 minutes of
play. The Panthers (2-2, 2-0) tied the game up in the final minute
of the third when Moncrief Holmes capped a 7 play, 33 yard drive
with a six yard scoring run.
After the ensuing SU drive stalled
after eight plays, FC drove the ball 80 yards in just five plays to
score what would prove to be the winning touchdown. Ferrum had two
plays of more than 30 yards on the drive; Holmes began the series
with a 37 yard rush before Dustin Hamoy finished it with a 33 yard
pass completion from quarterback Kevin Embick.
Shenandoah had the ball inside the
Panthers 40 on three more occasions in the contest but could not get
the tying touchdown. The Hornets best chance came in the waning
moments of the period when SU recovered a fumble at the FC 30 and
drove it to the Ferrum 5, but the Panthers held on 4th
and 3 to preserve the victory.
McGhee finished with 22 carries for
79 yards to lead Shenandoah while Holmes had eight carries for 92
yards for Ferrum. FC finished with 285 yards in total offense to the
Hornets 246. This is a season best for Shenandoah.
