Volleyball and Soccer Lose

Women’s Volleyball

WINCHESTER , Va. – The women’s volleyball team was unable to extend its Dixie Conference winning streak to three Sunday afternoon as Averett University took a 3-1 (30-32, 35-33, 30-19, 30-13) win at SU.

Junior Tara Russell (Williamsport, Md./Hagerstown CC) had 15 kills and Aly Benton (Bunker Hill , W. Va./Musselman) added 13, but Averett (11-8, 5-1) swept games two through five after the Hornets (8-13, 3-3) won the opening contest.

Junior Lesley Beard (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) contributed 39 assists offensively.

SU completes its first round of Dixie Conference action Tuesday evening at Ferrum.


Women’s Soccer

WINCHESTER, Va. – The women’s soccer team dropped its third straight Dixie Conference contest Sunday afternoon; the Hornets fell 8-0 to Greensboro College.

Greensboro (3-3, 2-2) took a 2-0 lead into the halftime lockerroom and then added four more goals in the first 18 minutes of the second half to cruise to the victory.

The Pride outshot SU ( 2-7-1 ) 25-3 in the contest.  Freshman keeper Karen Hild (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) made nine saves in just under 68 minutes of action. Stephanie Rush (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) added two more in relief of Hild.

Shenandoah ventures to the nation’s capital on Wednesday for a non-league game against Trinity College.


Men’s Soccer

WINCHESTER , Va. – The men’s soccer team also was unable to defeat Greensboro Sunday afternoon; the Pride earned a 3-1 Dixie Conference victory on the strength of two first half tallies.

GC (4-3, 2-0) got all of the goals it would need in the first 32 minutes when Buddy Forward converted a penalty kick in the 10th minute and the Duncan Edwards had an unassisted goal 22 minutes later.

Shenandoah (3-4-2,1-1) got itself back into the contest in the 61st minute when junior Jesse Fullerton (Catharpin, Va./Stonewall Jackson) one-timed a Luis Collantes (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams) volley from 20 yards out.

Shenandoah continued to keep up the pressure on the GC goal, but the Pride sealed the victory with 11 minutes left when Charlie Blackwell re-directed an Edwards cross past SU keeper Tom Malinosky (Clearwater, Fla./Clearwater Catholic) from right in front of the net.

Shenandoah is now off until hosting Ferrum College in a Saturday afternoon contest. This Homecoming 2002 game starts at 1:00.
