Both Soccer Teams Win

Volleyball Loses 3-0 to Roanoke ; Women’s XC 6th at Bridgewater

Women’s Soccer

WINCHESTER , Va.  Coach Brandon Padgett’s women’s soccer team snapped its four game losing streak Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Trinity (D.C.).

SU (2-10) earned its second victory of the fall with a pair of goals in the first half. Senior Melissa Reed ( Lebanon , Conn. /Lyman) opened the scoring with a chip shot from 15 yards out just 1:36 into the contest off an assist from freshman Angie Bullock (McGraw, N.Y./McGraw). Five minutes later, Jessica Padgett ( Cincinnati , Ohio /Ross) netted what proved to be the game winner when she one-touched a pass from Reed off of a Shannon Revels ( Spotsylvania , Va. /Spotsylvania) corner kick.

Freshman keeper Dana D’Agostino (Wantage, N.J./High Pointe Regional) had three saves in her first collegiate victory.

Trinity (1-4) got its lone goal in with three seconds to play when Lilly Herrera beat D’Agostino from right in front.

Shenandoah completes a four game homestand on Monday with a Dixie Conference contest against NC Wesleyan. Game time is 3:00 .


Men’s Soccer

FERRUM, Va. – The men were also victorious Saturday afternoon; SU improved to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in Dixie Conference play with a 3-0 shutout over Ferrum College .

Shenandoah achieved the victory with three goals in a 17 minute span midway thru the second half. Freshman Mohamed Sankoh ( Alexandria , Va. /TC Williams) scored the game winner in the 64th minute when he knocked in a loose ball just in front of the Ferrum (3-10, 1-3) goal.

Sophomore Stefan Hasson ( Herndon , Va. /Oakton) and junior Will Scott ( Chesapeake , Va. /Great Bridge) added insurance goals in the 79th and 81st  minutes, respectively.

Keepers Tom Malinosky ( Clearwater , Fla. /Clearwater Catholic) and Brian Cline ( Woodstock , Va. /Central) made a combined six saves to share the team’s third shutout victory of the season.

The Hornets will travel to Newport News on Wednesday night for a 7:00 contest at Christopher Newport.


Women’s Volleyball

WINCHESTER , Va.  The women’s volleyball team was unable to make it a Saturday Shenandoah sweep as the Hornets fell 3-0 (19-30, 22-30, 25-30) to Roanoke College .

Freshman Hannah Williams ( Salem , Va. /Glenvar) led SU (2-11) with seven kills and six digs. Senior Brandy Kuykendall ( Winchester , Va. /James Wood) had 20 assists and eight digs while Aly Benton ( Bunker Hill , W. Va./Musselman) had a career high seven blocks (four solo).

The Hornets are in action again on Monday in when they take on Greensboro and Methodist at Christopher Newport. This Dixie Conference mini-tournament is a makeup from the weekend following the terrorist attacks.


Women’s Cross Country

BRIDGEWATER , Va. – The women’s cross country team finished sixth Saturday at the Bridgewater College Invitational with 164 points. Eastern Mennonite University won the event with 34.

Freshman Erin West ( Alexandria , Va./West Potomac) led the women over the 5000 meter course with a 23:13 , 26th place finish.

The women will be idle next week due to fall break.
