WINCHESTER, Va. – The SU men’s soccer team took a major step forward in its bid to return to the Dixie Conference Tournament this season with a 1-0 victory over Christopher Newport Wednesday afternoon.

SU (5-4-2 , 3-1) got the only goal of the contest in the 34th minute when senior Will Scott (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) gathered his own rebound and slipped the ball past sprawling CNU keeper Martin Zelada.

Shenandoah is now a half-game behind the previously unbeaten Captains (7-6-1, 4-1) for the league lead and tied with Greensboro for second place. The top four teams make the post-season Dixie Conference Tournament.

The Hornets outshot CNU 9-2 in the first half of play, but had to hold on as the Captains took 9 of the 12 second half shots. SU keeper Tom Malinosky (Clearwater, Fla./Clearwater Catholic) made four saves in earning his second shutout of the year; all of his saves came in the second half.
