Men's Soccer
WINCHESTER, Va. -
Shenandoah and Bridgewater battled for 120
minutes Monday afternoon, but for the second
straight season no victor was decided as the two
teams battled to a 1-1 tie. SU and BC opened the
1999 season with a 2-2 contest on September 1 in
Bridgewater, Va.
Bridgewater (4-8-1) scored
the first goal of the game in the 39th
minute when Justin Gilliam took a cross from Brad
Hawkins and slipped his shot by SU keeper Tom
Malinosky (Clearwater, Fla./Clearwater Catholic)
from 15 yards out. Just when it looked like this
goal would be the only one of the contest,
freshman George Shirley (Gatlinburg, Tenn./Pittmann)
tied it for the hosts. Shirley took a cross from
classmate Jesse Fullerton (Catharpin, Va./Stonewall
Jackson) and ripped a shot from 25 yards out into
the right panel of the net with just five minutes
to play in regulation.
The Hornets (2-8-2)
apparently won the game on two different
occasions in the 30 minute overtime, but had one
goal called back for an offside and another for a
foul.
