Women’s Soccer Finishes Home Slate with Win

Women’s Soccer

WINCHESTER, Va. – The women’s soccer team completed its 2001 home season Friday afternoon with a 1-0 Dixie Conference victory over Averett University.

Senior Megan Tupper (Bowie, Md. /Anne Arundel CC) gave SU (3-13, 1-6 Dixie) with her goal in the 79th minute off an assist from sophomore Shannon Revels (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania).

Goalkeeper Dana D’Agostino (Wantage, N.J./High Pointe Regional) did not have to make a save in earning her second shutout of the season. Shenandoah outshot Averett (0-14, 0-7) 30-0 in the contest.

Women’s Volleyball

WINCHESTER , Va. – The volleyball team was unable to make it two in a row for the Hornets on the afternoon; Christopher Newport came back to take a 3-1 (25-30, 30-22, 30-16, 30-22) over host Shenandoah.

SU (3-16, 1-9) took game one 30-25 and bolted out to a 10-6 lead in game two, but saw the Dixie Conference leading Captains (15-9, 9-0) roar back to take the final three games of the match.

Senior Lindsey Sheppard had a game high 28 kills while Nina Richardson added 52 assists for the visitors. Junior Carly Higbee ( Catlett , Va. / Liberty ) led SU with eight assists and Brandy Kuykendall ( Winchester , Va. /James Wood) had 25 assists. Freshman Hannah Williams ( Salem , Va. /Glenvar) also played well with eight digs.

The women are in action again on Saturday when they host a Dixie Conference mini-tournament. The day starts off with the Hornets against Methodist at 11 and concludes with an SU/Greensboro match at 7:00 . CNU will face Methodist at 1:30 and Greensboro at 4:30 .
