GREENSBORO

– Blocked.
Greensboro
College
converted two blocked punts into touchdowns and then blocked an
overtime field goal attempt as
the Pride stole a 24-21 Dixie Conference victory over visiting Shenandoah
University
Saturday night.
Shenandoah (1-5, 1-2) outgained
Greensboro (2-4, 2-1) 345 to 179, including 233 to 135 on the
ground, but could only watch as GC’s Erik Naglee nailed a 40 yard
field goal on the Pride’s first offensive possession of overtime.
GC only needed the Naglee field
goal after they blocked SU kicker Morgan Linkenauger’s (Lanexa,
Va./Lafayette)
34 yard attempt on 4th and 1 from the GC 16. The Pride
then gained just two yards on their three offensive plays before
turning the contest over to Naglee. The junior made the most of his
opportunity; his kick split the uprights and gave the hosts the
unlikely victory.
The Hornets found themselves as
overtime losers because GC made lightening strike twice in the
second quarter. After Dennis Robart (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Potomac
State) gave SU a 7-0 lead with a 1-yard touchdown run on the final
play of the first, GC took a 14-7 halftime advantage by blocking
consecutive Ben Willard (Trumansburg, NY/Potomac State) punts deep
inside SU territory at the 2:44 and 51 second marks. The Pride had
to advance the ball just one yard following both recoveries, and
scored the second touchdown on a 4th and goal play as
time expired.
SU tied the game at 14-14 on senior
Wes Karns’ (Martinsburg, W. Va./Glenville State) first touchdown
of the season at the 6:51 mark of the third and then made it 21-14
with 8:59 to play when sophomore Junior Greene (Aroda, Va./Madison
County) hauled in a 41 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Wayne
Hogwood (Arlington, Va./Wakefield).
Unfortunately for the visitors, GC
answered the Greene score with a 10 play, 82 yard drive of their own
to tie the game for the third and final time of the evening.
Shenandoah took the ensuing kickoff
and took just four plays to drive all the way to the GC 23, but
fumbled the ball back to the Pride with
3:24
left to kill any chances of a victory in regulation.
Robart finished with a season high
81 yards on 19 carries while Hogwood added 55 on 17 attempts. He was
also 11 for 23 for 127 and the touchdown through the air. Greene set
a new school mark with eight catches for 98 yards.

Men’s Golf
FRONT ROYAL,
Va.
– The SU golf completed its fall season this weekend with an
eighth place finish at the Virginia State Division III
Championships. Shenandoah shot a 325-332—657 over the 6399 yard,
par 72 Shenandoah Valley Golf Club course.
Juniors Kevin Richards (Denville,
N.J./Morris Knolls) and Byron Pitts (Nokesville
,
Va./Home
School) shared medalist honors
for the Hornets. The two men finished tied for 25th with
a 19-over-par 163. Pitts shot 81-82 while Richards carded one of two
SU rounds in the 70s when he backed up his opening 84 with a closing
79.
Tim Detweiler (

Pitts; he tied for 30th overall.

Men’s Soccer
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C./WINCHESTER,
Va.
- The men’s soccer team rebounded from a tough, 3-0 Dixie
Conference loss at NC Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon to defeat
Lincoln
University
by the same score 24 hours later.
SU took just 10 minutes to get all
of the goals it would need against
Lincoln
(3-5); sophomore Luis Collantes (Alexandria,
Va./TC
Williams) corralled a rebound of a Will Scott (Chesapeake,
Va./Great
Bridge) shot and knocked it in off of the crossbar.
Stefan Hasson (Herndon,
Va./Oakton)
and James Jackson (Chesapeake,
Va./Old
Dominion) then sealed the game with goals in the 16th and
25th minutes, respectively.
The loss at NC Wesleyan was
especially tough; the Hornets could have tied for the regular season
championship with a win on Saturday and a victory at Averett next
Sunday afternoon. With the loss to the Bishops and Christopher
Newport’s victory over
Greensboro
Saturday night, SU (
7-5-2
,
4-2) can now do no better than a No. 3 seed at the season ending
Dixie Conference Tournament.
Wesleyan (
8-5-2
,
3-1-1
) achieved the victory on goals in
the 37th, 65th and 69th minutes.
The final goal was on a penalty kick.
Senior
goalkeeper Tom Malinosky (Clearwater,
Fla./Clearwater Catholic) made four saves in the losing effort.

Women’s Soccer
WINCHESTER.
Va.– The women’s soccer team became the second SU team in as many
days to lose in overtime as Hollins
University
used a goal with just two minutes left to take a 4-3 non-conference
victory Sunday afternoon.
After freshman Betsy Foster
(Fairfax, Va./Luther Prep) forced the two 10 minute extra sessions
with her goal in the 71st minute, Hollins took the lead
for the fourth time in the contest as Blair Pendleton converted a
breakaway from right in front of SU keeper Dee Fisher (Arlington,
Va./Yorktown).
Jillian Erb (Riesterstown,
Md./Western Tech) tied the game for SU (
2-12-1
)
in the 33rd minute before Lisa Cantore (Earlysville,
Va./Albermarle)
opened the second half scoring with an unassisted goal eight minutes
after intermission.
Fisher had six saves in the loss.
