Football
WINCHESTER
,
Va.
– Shenandoah University drew a Shentel Stadium record crowd to its
first homecoming football game in 35 years Saturday night, but the
3036 fans went away disappointed as Chowan erased an early deficit to
take a 31-21 Dixie Conference victory.
Chowan
(2-5, 1-3) won its first game since 80 year old Lou Saban took over as
Head Coach two weeks ago. It is also the first ever Dixie Conference
victory for the Braves.
For
the second straight week, Shenandoah (2-5, 1-3) jumped out to early
lead only to see its opponent storm back.
The Hornets opened the contest by driving 53 yards on five
plays to take a 7-0 lead on a 1-yard plunge from quarterback Wayne
Hogwood (
Arlington
,
Va.
/Wakefield)
at the 11:12 mark.
Unfortunately
for the overflow crowd, Chowan struck back with 24 seconds remaining
the opening period for what would be the first of three first half
touchdowns. Bill Eckles tied the game for the visitors when he hauled
in a 7 yard pass from Chris Stodgill.
Stodgill
would give his club a two touchdown advantage by halftime by throwing
TD passes of 14 yards to Robert Saunders and 45 yards to Russell
Dudley at the
8:22
and
4:48
marks, respectively.
The
Hornets got to within seven when sophomore LJ Curry (Odenton, Md./Fort
Meade) capped a six play, 28 yard drive midway through the third and
then tied it on a 5 yard run around left end by Wes Karns
(Martinsburg, W. Va./Glenville State) on the first play of the fourth
quarter.
However,
Chowan answered right back with an eight play, 64 yard drive. Jawarren
Coles blasted in untouched on 3rd and 6 from the 13 to give
his team the lead for good.
After
SU fumbled on a 4th and 1 from its own 46 with just over
five minutes to play, kicker Craig Janney gave the Braves a measure of
breathing room with a 35 yard field goal at the
1:21
mark.
Stodgill
was 18 of 28 through the air for 231 yards and the three touchdowns
while Coles added 108 yards on 21 carries.
Anthony
McGhee (Reston, Va./South Lakes) had 67 yards on 18 carries for the
Hornets. Hogwood was 5 for 16 for 76 yards and two interceptions.
