WINCHESTER, Va. (October 21,
2000) - The women's volleyball team dropped two
matches on Saturday at the penultimate Dixie
Conference mini-tournament of the season, hosted
by the Hornets. Shenandoah (4-22, 0-9) was swept
in both matches, falling to North Carolina
Wesleyan 15-8, 15-12, 15-6 and Ferrum College 15-12,
15-13, 15-11.
In the first match of the
day for the Hornets, sophomore Carly Higbee (Catlett,
Va./Liberty) had 11 kills and six digs while
junior Sonja North (Strasburg, Va./Stasburg)
added seven kills and 11 digs. Freshman Lesley
Beard (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) also
turned in a strong performance with 18 assists
and 12 digs.
Junior Misty Towery (Martinsville,
Va./Prince Edward) had a team high 10 kills and
nine digs in the Ferrum match. Beard and North
played well defensively with 21 and 20 digs,
respectively. Beard also had 18 assists.

Men's Golf
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (October
20, 2000) - The golf team finished second out of
four teams at the Apprentice Shipbuilders Fall
Invitational, held at the Hamptons on Friday,
October 20. Junior Jason Aud (Mount Airy, Md./Frederick
CC) was the individual medalist for the Hornets
with a four-over-par 75. Freshman Chris Fraser (Ogdensburg,
NY/Ogdensburg Free Academy) was three strokes
back at 78.
The golfers complete their
fall season this Tuesday with a home match.

Football
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Eight
turnovers on the day killed the SU football team,
as the Hornets dropped a 39-14 decision to
Division I-AA La Salle University. SU (2-6)
fumbled the ball away six times and also threw
two interceptions as the Explorers (6-1)
converted five of those miscues into touchdowns.
On the positive side, coach
Walter Barr's club forced five turnovers of its
own and piled up 242 offensive yards on the day.
SU also set a new school record by blocking two
La Salle PAT attempts.
Senior Trey Kern (Winchester,
Va./Hampden-Sydney) led SU on offense with 70
yards rushing on 10 attempts. He had the Hornets
longest gain of the day, 34 yards, to help set up
the team's second and final touchdown of the
afternoon. Kern had previously scored the Hornets
first touchdown with a two yard run at the 10:28
mark of the fourth.
Matt Harrison (Rockville,
Md./Magruder) and Kalvin Oliver (Reston, Va./South
Lakes) led SU on defense with nine and eight
tackles, respectively. Oliver added the Hornets
lone sack of the day.
SU travels to Danville, Va.
next weekend to take on fellow first year program
Averett College.
Men's Soccer
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The SU
men's soccer team fell to 2-9-1 overall and 0-5
in the Dixie on Saturday with a 6-0 loss to North
Carolina Wesleyan College. Sophomore Tommy
Malinosky (Clearwater, Fla./Clearwater Catholic)
had seven saves for the Hornets in the loss.
The men host Chowan on
Wednesday.

Women's Soccer
DANVILLE, Va. - The SU
women's team earned its first win of the season
on Saturday, defeating Averett College 6-1. The
Hornets are now 1-11-1 overall and 1-5 in the
Dixie after the victory.
Senior Katie Myers (Martinsburg,
W. Va./Martinsburg) and freshman Shea
Riemenschneider (Winchester, Va./James Wood) each
had two goals and an assist in the win.
Shenandoah completes its
season on Sunday with a home match against
Virginia Wesleyan.
Shenandoah
