Men’s Soccer Qualifies for Dixie Tournament

WINCHESTER, Va. – The men’s soccer team qualified for Dixie Conference post-season for the first time in school history Sunday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over NC Wesleyan.

With only one Dixie game left, Shenandoah (10-4-1, 4-2) can now finish no lower than fourth in league play. With a win over current seventh place Averett next Saturday, SU will enter the four team tournament as the No. 3 seed and will meet either Greensboro or Christopher Newport in the first round. Those two teams play this afternoon with the regular season title likely on the line.

The Hornets achieved the victory by erasing a one-goal deficit with four unanswered tallies. After Kwabena Boakye gave NC Wesleyan (3-13, 2-4) the early lead on a goal in the 28th minute, junior Will Scott (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) tied the game with just over a minute to play in the first half by tapping home a rebound of his own saved shot.

SU then pulled away in the second half; Stefan Hasson (Herndon, Va./Oakton) scored what proved to be the game winner in the 56th minute when he beat three defenders and ripped his shot past Bishops keeper Paul Orbacz from 12 yards out.

Scott and Guy Auguste (Chesapeake, Va./Virginia Wesleyan) added insurance goals in the 65th and 76th minutes.

Keeper Tom Malinosky (Clearwater, Fla./Clearwater Catholic) made six saves in the win.

The Hornets are at Villa Julie on Wednesday afternoon in the squad’s final non-league game of the season.
