Men’s Soccer
DANVILLE
,
Va.
– The SU men’s soccer team qualified for Dixie Conference
post-season play Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 victory at
Averett
University
.
Shenandoah (
9-5-2
,
5-2) clinched third place in the
Dixie
with the win over Averett (
3-12-2
,
2-4-1
).
As the No. 3 seed, SU will face No. 2 seed
Greensboro
in first round of the tourney on November 8. The winner of that game
will face the winner of the No.1 Christopher Newport vs No. 4 NC
Wesleyan game for the Tournament championship and the accompanying
automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Sophomore Luis Collantes (
Alexandria
,
Va.
/TC
Williams) gave the Hornets the early lead against the Cougars with
his goal off of a James Jackson (
Chesapeake
,
Va.
/Old
Dominion) assist in the 29th minute. After Averett held
SU at bay for the next 40 minutes, the Hornets put the game out of
reach with three goals in a 12 minute span.
Jesse Fullerton (
Catharpin
,
Va.
/Stonewall
Jackson), Will Scott (
Chesapeake
,
Va.
/Great
Bridge) and Jackson scored in the 68th, 74th
and 80th minutes to turn the game into a rout. For Scott,
his goal puts the senior within three of the all-time goal scoring
mark at SU. Scott has at
least two games left in which to break the record: Monday at home in
the regular season finale against Catholic and against
Greensboro
in the Dixie Tournament semi-finals.
Freshmen Chris Peter (
Chantilly
,
Va./Northern Virginia CC) and Kyle Hodges (
Virginia
Beach
,
Va.
/Kempsville)
shared the shutout with two and one saves, respectively.

Women’s Soccer
DANVILLE
,
Va.
– The women’s soccer team could have used a couple of the
men’s goals; Averett used two tallies midway through the second
half Sunday afternoon to take a 2-1 Dixie Conference victory.
The win clinches at least a tie for
sixth place for Averett (
4-12-2
,
2-5). SU (
3-13-1
, 1-5) must defeat first place CNU
in Tuesday’s season finale to tie the Lady Cougars for the sixth
place spot.
Sunday’s contest was a physical
one as six yellow cards and 11 fouls were called in the final 45
minutes of play. Five of those yellows were issued to Shenandoah.
Homestanding Averett earned its
first ever win over Shenandoah by scoring goals in the 61st
and 74th minutes. Heather Lethbridge (
Belvidere
,
N.J./Belvidere) answered for SU with just over 10 minutes to play
off an assist from Betsy Foster (
Woodbridge
,
Va.
/Forest
Park), but could get no closer.
Freshman Dee Fisher (
Arlington
,
Va.
/
Yorktown
)
had two saves in the loss.
