DANVILLE, Va. (October 28,
2000) - In a contest between two first-year
programs, the Shenandoah University Hornets
grabbed the upper hand Saturday afternoon with a
30-0 shutout of host Averett College. The shutout
is the first for SU (2-6, 1-2 Dixie) since
reviving football this season after a 33-year
absence. The Hornets last shutout before dropping
football after the 1967 season happened against
the Quantico Marines in the season finale of the
1935 season. Before adding football this season,
Shenandoah sponsored the sport from 1919-38 and
from 1964-67.
Against Averett (1-8, 0-3
Dixie) Coach Walter Barr's club used 196 rushing
yards and another 50 through the air to win the
game between the Dixie Conference two first-year
programs. The Cougars gained 182 yards
offensively on the day but were hampered by four
turnovers, including a fourth quarter
interception in the end zone on 1st
and goal from the 3-yard line.
Senior Trey Kern (Winchester,
Va./Hampden-Sydney) and sophomore Dennis Robart (Cuyahoga
Falls, Oh./Potomac State) each ran for two
touchdowns while Morgan Linkenhauger (Lanexa, Va./Lafayette)
completed the scoring with a 27-yard field goal
with 4:17 to play in the contest. Kern led SU
with 75 yards rushing on 18 carries, all in the
first half.
Linebacker Matt Harrison (Rockville,
Md./Magruder), making his first start of the
season, had eight tackles and a fumble recovery
to lead the defense.
Trace Smithers rushed for
64 yards on 15 carries for Averett. The Cougars
also had six players record over 10 tackles in
the game: Robert Suggs, Brandon Cantrell, Jason
Holaday, Derek Austin, Kelvin Hutcheson and Troy
Long. They had 13, 12, 11, 11, 11 and 10 tackles,
respectively.
Cantrell also finished the
game at quarterback after starter Chris Robinson
was knocked out with a injury early in the fourth
quarter. Cantrell was 0-1 with an interception
and had eight yards rushing on two carries in
three series on offense.
