Fayetteville , N.C. - Shenandoah University completed its second season of intercollegiate football Saturday afternoon with a 17-12 Dixie Conference victory over Methodist College .

Shenandoah (5-5, 3-3) completes the year on a three-game winning streak and becomes the fastest start-up Dixie team to five wins with the victory. After falling behind 3-0 on a 28 yard field goal from Philip Keever at the 4:15 mark of the first, the Hornets scored 17 unanswered points in the second and third periods to secure the win.

Up 10-3 following a Richard Hodge 2-yard TD, Coach Walter Barr’s club scored what would prove to be the winning points on the first possession of the second half.

Lightning struck for the second straight week as Hornets special teams turned in a huge play. Just as in last week’s victory over Utica , Shenandoah blocked a punt in opponent territory. Sophomore Kalvin Oliver turned the trick this week, blocking a Kenod Powe punt at the Methodist 48. Freshman Wayne Washington picked up the bouncing ball at the Monarch 3 and waltzed in untouched to give the visitors a 17-3 lead.

The blocked punt seemed to wake Methodist (5-5, 3-3) out of its doldrums as the hosts got back into the contest with a seven play, 62 yard drive to make the score 17-9 Shenandoah. After Mikey Brambles blasted over on 2nd and goal from the 1, MC was penalized 15 yards for excessive celebration.

This penalty proved costly as the Monarchs muffed the PAT snap and was unable to convert the kick.

The two teams then traded the ball back and fourth three times before Methodist got to within a touchdown on a 25-yard field goal from Keever 3:35 to play.

Shenandoah was forced to punt on the ensuing possession, but freshman George Hewan picked off MC quarterback Dustin Daniels 1st down pass on the Hornets 19. With the Monarchs out ime-outs, SU ran out the final 1:21 of the contest.

Anthony McGhee led SU with 188 yards rushing on 18 carries with Hodge adding another 25 yards on 13 attempts. Maurice Washington had 75 yards on 14 carries for Methodist while Daniels was 14 for 32 for 164 and the interception through the air.
