Men’s Basketball

WINCHESTER , Va. – The Shenandoah University men’s basketball team opened its 2001-02 season in style Friday night as the Hornets drubbed Valley Forge Christian College 124-53 in the opening round of the BB&T Tournament.

With the win, SU (1-0) moves onto the tournament finals on Saturday against Salisbury University . The Sea Gulls advanced with an 88-35 win over Christendom Friday evening in the opening game of the tournament.

The 71 point victory set a school record for margin of victory and the 124 points is the most since a 126-123 win at Mary Washington in November 1994. Senior Ronald Merriwether ( Frankfurt , Germany /Giessen American) led seven players in double figures with 17 points. All 13 players who dressed for the contest scored at least two points and no player played longer than 24 minutes.

Women’s Basketball

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The women’s basketball team was not as fortunate as the men; Coach Kathy Orsini’s women fell in the opening round of the Washington College Sho’Time Shootout 73-63 to Virginia Wesleyan.

Shenandoah (0-1) will now face host Washington College in the consolation game on Saturday at 1:00 . Marietta ( Ohio ) defeated the host Shorewomen 90-85 to earn the finals berth.

The Hornets were plagued with poor shooting the first half of the contest as Virginia Wesleyan (1-0) jumped out to a 37-24 halftime advantage. SU shot just 10 for 30 (33.3 percent) prior to the intermission.

Senior Misty Towery ( Martinsville , Va./Prince Edward) led four players in double figures with 13 points. That output ties her career high.
