– The Shenandoah University men’s basketball team opened its
2001-02 season in style Friday night as the Hornets drubbed
Valley
Forge
Christian
College
124-53 in the opening round of the BB&T Tournament.
With the win, SU (1-0) moves onto the tournament
finals on Saturday against

.
The Sea Gulls advanced with an 88-35 win over Christendom Friday
evening in the opening game of the tournament.
The 71 point victory set a school record for margin
of victory and the 124 points is the most since a 126-123 win at Mary
Washington in November 1994. Senior Ronald Merriwether (
Frankfurt
,
Germany
/Giessen
American) led seven players in double figures with 17 points. All 13
players who dressed for the contest scored at least two points and no
player played longer than 24 minutes.

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The women’s basketball team
was not as fortunate as the men; Coach Kathy Orsini’s women fell in
the opening round of the Washington College Sho’Time Shootout 73-63
to Virginia Wesleyan.
Shenandoah (0-1) will now face host

in the consolation game on Saturday at

defeated the host Shorewomen 90-85 to earn the finals berth.
The Hornets were plagued with poor shooting the
first half of the contest as Virginia Wesleyan (1-0) jumped out to a
37-24 halftime advantage. SU shot just 10 for 30 (33.3 percent) prior
to the intermission.
Senior Misty Towery (
Martinsville
,
Va./Prince Edward) led four players in double figures with 13 points.
That output ties her career high.
