Men’s
Basketball
WINCHESTER
,
Va.
– The men’s basketball team earned its first title at its own
season opening tournament since the 1995-96 season with a wild, come
from behind 108-106 victory over Salisbury University Saturday
afternoon in the BB&T Bank championship game.
Shenandoah (2-0) trailed by as
much as 21 points in the contest before tying the game at 78 on a
Tyson Thompson (Keysville, Va./Randolph-Henry) jumper with five
seconds remaining in regulation.
The Hornets and Salisbury
(1-1) then traded punches like two heavyweight prize fighters for 15
minutes of overtime before junior Michael Atkins (Winchester,. Va./Sherando)
finally settled things by blocking a potential game-winning shot from
Salisbury
’s
Doug King with six seconds remaining the third overtime.
The three overtimes ties a
school record for the longest game ever played by an SU men’s
basketball team. Shenandoah defeated
Greensboro
106-97 on
February 13, 1999
in three extra periods.
Ironically, the Hornets found themselves down by 20+ points in that
contest as well.
Senior Ronald Merriwether (
Frankfurt
,
Germany
/Giessen
American) led SU in the scoring column for the second straight night.
He had a team high 27 points on 10 of 18 shooting from the floor and
also knocked down four three-pointers for the second time in as many
outings.
All three men who played
integral roles in the victory earned spots on the All-Tournament team
with Atkins and Merriwether sharing Most Valuable Player honors. This
is just the second time in the tournament’s 15 year history that two
players have shared MVP honors.
Phil Dixon ’96 and Al White
’96 were honored together when SU won the tournament in ’95.
