– The Men’s Basketball team was unable to extend its season
opening winning streak to three Monday night as Division I Liberty
took a 88-71 victory before 1753 fans at the Vines Center in
Lynchburg.
Liberty
(1-1) jumped out to a 54-20 lead at the half, forcing the Hornets into
20 turnovers and 8 for 29 (27.6 percent) shooting from the floor.
Shenandoah (2-1) refused to fold however, as sophomore Halston Camp (

– The Hornets could not get a mark in the win column as they dropped
their home opener in overtime to the Royals of Eastern Mennonite 90-87
before a crowd of 273 at Shingleton Gymnasium.
Shenandoah’s women managed
to find their offensive niche for the first time this season shooting
43.9% from the field. The
Hornets’ back court put on its strongest performance of the young
season led by senior guard Wendy Legge (Stephens City, Va./Sherando)
who recorded a team-high 26 points on 10 of 17 shooting coupled with 9
rebounds. Legge was paced
by fellow senior Rosaline Fisher (
Greencastle
,
Pa.
/Hagerstown
CC) who found the basket for a career-high 25 points raising her
team-leading average to 18.0 points per game.
Shenandoah (0-3) jumped out to
a commanding 18-4 lead with
11:47
to go in the first half before the Royals (2-1) cut the deficit to
seven at halftime with the score resting at 40-33.
The Hornets managed to cling
to a slim lead through most of the second half until EMU’s Emily
Mullet tied the game at 55 with three of her game-high 39 points at
the
9:34
mark. Despite being
plagued by foul trouble throughout much of the second half, the
Shenandoah women were able to keep themselves in the game, trading the
lead several times down the stretch.
Down by two with 14 seconds left, the Hornets’ sophomore
forward Bridget Robbins (Baker, W. Va./East Hardy) evened the score at
73 with a poised jump shot when a clutch effort was needed.
Eastern Mennonite’s Mullet
got the best of Shenandoah in the extra period, scoring 11 of her
team’s 17 points to seal the victory for the Royals.
