Men’s Basketball

Head Coach: Rob Harris

Overall Record: 1-1 Dixie Conference Record: 0-0

The men's basketball team began its 2000-01 season this past weekend with a runner-up performance at the 14th Annual F&M Bank-Winchester Apple Tip-Off Classic. On Friday, SU opened the Rob Harris era in style with an 88-50 blowout victory over Christendom. The Hornets had four players in double figures in the win, led by 15 points from junior Ronald Merriwether (Frankfurt, Germany/Giessen American). Senior Ted Davis (Clifton Forge, Va./Alleghany) added 14 while classmate Jeff Miller (Millersville, Md./Anne Arundel CC) pulled down 11 boards. Unfortunately for Harris and the Hornets, SU was unable to capture its first F&M title since the 1995-96 season as Apprentice took an 83-68 victory. Merriwether and Davis and Merriwether were both earned spots on the F&M All-Tournament team with 22 and 18 points, respectively. Merriwether also had a career high 16 rebounds. This week, the Hornets have just one game. They host Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday at 7:00 in the second game of a doubleheader with the women.

Women’s Basketball

Head Coach: Kathy Orsini

Overall Record: 0-1 Dixie Conference Record: 0-0

The women's team opened its season this past Saturday with a 90-38 loss to Heidelberg (Ohio). Cold shooting hampered the Hornets; they shot just 15 of 44 (34.1 percent) from the field in the loss. Senior Carrie Weimer (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) led SU with 15 points while junior Wendy Legge (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) added 10. Weimer, along with sophomore Adina Trammel (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) were tops on the boards with five each. The women have just one contest again this week. SU will host Washington & Lee on Tuesday at 5:00 in the first game of a men's/women's doubleheader.
