WINCHESTER
,
Va.
– After dropping their first three games of the season, the
women’s basketball team earned its first victory of the 2001-02
campaign with a convincing 84-71 non-league win over
Mary
Baldwin
College
.
Once again, SU (1-3) struggled
in the early going. After allowing Mary Baldwin (0-3) to open up an 11
point lead with just under five minutes to play in the first half,
Coach Kathy Orsini’s women were able to cut the halftime deficit to
just two at 33-31.
Shenandoah then came alive in
the second half behind a combination of tenacious full court pressure
and an offensive outburst from senior guard Rosaline Fisher (
Greencastle
,
Pa.
/Hagerstown
CC). Fisher netted 23 of her game high 34 points after the break to
key the comeback victory. Fisher made nine of her 13 second half shots
while classmate Wendy Legge (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) chipped in
with 17 points and eight rebounds and freshman Jenny Gray (Sumerduck,
Va./
Liberty
)
12 points.

HARRISONBURG

– The men’s basketball team was not as fortunate as their female
counterparts Tuesday evening; SU fell back to the .500 mark on the
year as Eastern Mennonite took a 73-68 victory at EMU’s University
Commons.
Shenandoah (2-2) led 36-29 at
the break but saw the Royals (1-2) shoot15 for 26 (57.7 percent) from
the field in the second half to seize the win. After holding the lead
for virtually the entire contest, SU saw the hosts get back into the
contest on a 12-6 run to start the second half.
After EMU got to within one at
42-41 with
16:29
to play, the two teams traded the lead three times and were tied on
four other occasions the rest of the way. Neither team led by more
than three points until the Hornets were forced to foul in the waning
moments of the contest.
Senior Jacob Bates
(Berryville, Va./Clarke County) led Shenandoah with a career high 21
points while sophomore Chad Brashears (
Hagerstown
,
Md.
/
St.
Maria Goretti) added 10.
