– The men’s basketball team got itself back on the winning track
Friday evening with a 78-68 victory over host
Southern Virginia
.
SU (3-2) had lost two straight since opening the season with a
BB&T Tournament championship.
In its first ever meeting with
the Knights (2-5), Shenandoah bolted out to an early 21-point
advantage before heading into the lockerroom with a 36-29 lead. Senior
Jacob Bates (Berryville, Va./Clarke County) led the early charge by
scoring 10 of his co-team high 15 points in the first 20 minutes of
play.
Southern
Virginia
threatened to make a game of it following the
intermission by shooting 16 for 32 (50.0 percent) in the final 20
minutes. However, the Knights could get no closer than four points
during this stretch.
Head Coach Robert Harris saw
all five starters score in double figures for the third time in five
games. In addition to Bates’ 15, senior Ronald Merriwether
(Frankfurt, Germany/Giessen American) and junior Tyson Thompson
(Keysville, Va./Randolph Henry) added 15 , Michael Atkins (Winchester,
