Hornets Buzz Mens Basketball

The men's basketball team
improved its record to 5-2 overall this past week
with two wins in three games. On Monday, the
Hornets opened the week with an 89-77 victory
over longtime rival Frostburg State. Senior Ted
Davis (Clifton Forge, Va./Allegheny) led the
victors with 18 points while junior Chris
Merriweather (Centreville, Va./Chowan College)
added a career high 17 and freshman Chad
Breahears (Hagerstown, Md./St. Maria Goretti) 15.
The men then completed the week by finishing
third at the Chowan College Shootout. After a 91-57
loss to Alvernia in Friday's first round, SU came
back to defeat Salisbury State 84-80 in the
consolation contest. Davis earned himself All-Tournament
honors by scoring a game high 26 points and
pulling down a career high 12 rebounds against
the Sea Gulls after leading his squad with 16
points in the Alvernia loss. Sophomore Michael
Atkins (Winchester, Va./Sherando) capped off a
strong performance at the tournament by adding 16
points on Saturday after scoring 13 on Friday
night. This week, the Hornets have just one
contest due to final exams. SU will travel to St.
Mary's of Maryland on Saturday afternoon for a 2:00
tip-off.

Womens Basketball

The women's basketball team
lost suffered two difficult losses this past week
to fall to 3-3 overall on the year. On Friday
night, SU ran into a buzzsaw in the form of
Eastern Mennonite University's Emily Mullet and
lost an 85-67 decision to the visiting Royals.
The Hornets had a 40-37 lead going into the
intermission, but Mullet scored 29 second half
points to propel EMU to the win. Mullet finished
with 42 points and had 10 three-pointers. Senior
Carrie Weimer (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport)
led Shenandoah with a career high 21 points while
junior Rosaline Fisher (Greencastle, Pa./Hagerstown
CC) chipped in with a career high 11. Sophomore
Adina Trammel (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County)
continued her strong work on the boards by
pulling down a game high 13 rebounds. Fisher
equaled her Friday output on Saturday against
Chowan, but it was not enough as the Lady Braves
took a 59-54 decision. This week, the women host
Carthage (Wisc.) on Saturday in their final
contest of the semester. Game time at Shingleton
Gymnasium is set for 3:00.
