WINCHESTER,
Va.
- Shenandoah University Athletic Director Shep
Campbell
announced Monday that he has promoted Paul Barnes to Head Football
Coach, effective immediately. Barnes takes the position over from
program founder Walter Barr, who announced on October 30 that he was
retiring from head coaching at the end of the 2001 season.
Campbell,
who accepted the AD job on November 30, wasted no time in making his
first big decision. “I met with Paul a week ago,”
Campbell
said. “I have known him since he came to SU in 1999 and I have
always been impressed with his coaching abilities.
“The
entire football team and members of the Shenandoah community were
strongly in favor of giving Paul this job. I agree with them totally
that he is exactly the type of person we are looking for to continue
the growth of the football program.”
Barnes,
42, came to Shenandoah in June 1999 as the Head Assistant Football
Coach. He was Barr’s first addition to the brand new program and
teamed with Barr and fellow full-time Assistant Coach Reed Prosser to
recruit 117 players for the 2000 season. The Hornets finished 3-6
against NCAA competition in that inaugural campaign and followed that
up with a 5-5 finish this past fall.
“I
am very excited to get this opportunity,” Barnes said. “I really
enjoy working at Shenandoah, and I think we have the core of players
here that we need to be successful. I have learned a great deal from
Coach Barr over the last couple of years and I look forward to
continuing the great work he started.”
Although
the university had over 50 applications from around the country,
Campbell
only interviewed Barnes. “I
reviewed all of the inquiries with members of the athletic department
staff and we saw no reason to look anywhere else,”
Campbell
said. “With the success that the football team has shown in its two
years, it makes sense to keep the current staff in place. Dr. Davis
(Shenandoah President) agrees that Paul is the best person for the
job.”
Barnes
will retain Prosser as one of his two full-time assistants and is
already in the process of looking for an additional full-time
assistant. “We will look for the best candidate possible,” Barnes
said. “Character is going to be a big issue, because we have
instilled a discipline in the program that has been a major part of
our success and we need to continue with that. Reed has agreed to
coach on whatever side of the ball I need him to, so that allows us to
find either an offensive or defensive guy. We would like to find
someone who can step in right away.”
Barnes
and his wife,
Dixie
, have three children: Austin, 10; Alex, 8; and, Ashleigh, 4.
