The Mayan civilization was one of the most intelligent ancient civilizations in all of human history. They understood, charted, and predicted the movement of the sun, moon, planets and stars. Mathematically, they were centuries ahead of European and Asian civilizations in that they were the first humans to conceive of and use the concept of “zero.” Their calendar was even more accurate than the one we use today. Why then, did they predict the end of the world to occur on Dec. 21, 2012, the day of this year’s winter solstice?
Come to Halpin-Harrison Hall on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. for a panel presentation, “The Mayan Prophecy of 2012: The End of the World?” given by the FYS students of Associate Professor of Foreign Languages Bryan Pearce-Gonzales, Ph.D. For more information, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
