Shenandoah senior Cory Gay has been named the Virginia State Special Teams Player of the Year in selections announced Friday by the TD Club of Richmond. Gay, the Hornets punter, is one of seven players from NCAA Division II, III, NAIA and USCAA programs honored by the TD Club with a positional Player of the Year award.

Gay, who was previously named first team All-ODAC, had 59 punts for a 36.9-yard average with 11 punts downed inside the 20. His 65-yarder against Ferrum on Sept. 8 tied the school record. Additionally, he was a perfect 4-for-4 for 88 yards passing on fake punts. All four of these passes went for first downs. Finally, as the squad’s backup placekicker, he was 4-for-4 on point-after attempts. Gay is the first Shenandoah player honored by the TD Club of Richmond.
