The Hornet Card

What is the Hornet Card ?

The Hornet Card is your official university identification. It must be carried at all times on campus and be presented upon request to university officials. The card is non-transferable. By use of the card, you agree to all terms and conditions in effect at the time of its use. You are responsible for bringing your Hornet Card back with you each semester. Your Hornet Card is the property of Shenandoah University and must be surrendered to the Business Office upon request, withdrawal, or graduation from the university.

How do I get my Hornet Card ?

Hornet Cards are issued each semester in the ballroom during check-in to new students or to returning students who have lost their ID. If you do not receive your card during this time, you will need to go to the Auxiliary Services Office in the Wilkins Administration Building (ground floor) or call for an appointment at 665-4925.

Where can I use my Hornet Card ?

Currently, the Hornet Card is used in the residence halls, dining hall, snack bar, bookstore, library, laundry facilities, soda and copiers.

Residence Halls - Residence halls will be locked between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. throughout the semester. During these hours, boarding students will need to use their Hornet Card to gain access through the main entrance of their dorm. Simply pass your card through the card reader and the door will unlock. If you do not have your Hornet Card with you, you must call the R.A. on duty or a friend. After midnight, you should contact security. Note: Do not prop doors or use the side doors during these hours. They are alarmed.

Dining Hall - Students who have signed up for a meal plan must present their Hornet Card to the dining room attendant for access to food service. Your card will be passed through the card reader and the meal deducted from your meal plan allowance. Boarding students have three meal plan options available to them. First time boarders are not permitted on the 10 meal plan.

21 Meal Plan - This plan allows access to the dining hall a maximum of 21 times per week. This plan also allows you three guest passes per semester and a fifty dollar ($50.00) credit in the Hornet's Nest Snack Bar. The credit is put on your Hornet Card as a declining balance.

15 Meal Plan - This plan allows access to the dining hall a maximum of 15 meals per week. This plan also allows you a fifty dollar ($50.00) credit in the Hornet's Nest Snack Bar. The credit is put on your Hornet Card as a declining balance.

10 Meal Plan - This plan allows access to the dining room a maximum of 10 meals per week.

Boarding students must sign up for meal plans in the Student Programs Office. Commuting students and employees may also purchase a meal plan. To do so, you must see the Business Office. For current rates on Boarding and Commuter meal plans: Click Here.

Meal Equivalency and $50 credit - Meal equivalency and the $50 credit have been established to provide the student alternative dining in the Hornet's Nest Snack Bar. Meal equivalency is available under the 21, 15 and 10 meal plans. Students may only eat one time during that meal period either at the snack bar or the dining room. Uneaten meals and the $50.00 credit are not refundable. Prepackaged items and bottled drinks are are not available as equivalency purchases, but may be purchased with you $50.00 credit.

Special meal deals will be featured at the eqivalency rates or students may purchase items up to the dollar amount allowed. Purchases exceeding the dollar amount will be charged an additional cash amount.

Snack Bar - Employees and students may setup a declining balance to be used in the snack bar or dining room. To put money into your snack bar account, go to the food service cashiers.

Bookstore - Employees and students may setup a declining balance to be used in the bookstore. To put money into your bookstore account you may go to the Bookstore or Business Office. They will accept cash, check, mastercard, and visa. A credit on your student account can also be transferred to your bookstore account by the next business day.

Laundry Services - Residence hall students may utilize the cash stripe on the back of the Hornet Card for laundry service. Your student ID must be activated, one time only, with a location code. This is activated when you pick up your ID at check-in, or you may go to the Director of Auxiliary Services office (Wilkin's ground floor) if your card is not activated. Student's may setup a debit balance on their cards by going to the Danyl "Cash to Card" machine located in the Wilkin's Student Center and in the Smith Library. After establishing a debit amount on the cash stripe, your card is ready to use in the residence hall laundry facilities. Located in each residence hall laundry facility is a terminal that is used to activate the washers and dryers. Instructions are printed on the terminal to insure fast, efficient and convenient use of these machines. Coins may still be used.

Your card can also be used in most vending machines and for copies at the Smith Library. Simply follow the instructions on the machine you intend to use.

REMEMBER THAT YOUR HORNET CARD CASH STRIPE HAS MONETARY VALUE AND SHOULD BE PROTECTED THE SAME AS CASH. LOST, DAMAGED, OR STOLEN CARDS WILL NOT BE REFUNDED OR REPLACED. REFUNDS WILL NOT BE MADE ON UNUSED FUNDS. ANY BALANCE REMAINING ON YOUR CARD WILL CARRY OVER TO THE FOLLOWING SCHOOL YEAR.

Library - Students, faculty and staff must present their Hornet Card to check-out books and other materials from the Alson H. Smith Library.

The $50 Snack Bar credit, meal equivalencies and cash stripe are not refundable.

What happens if I lose my Hornet Card ?

Lost cards should be reported immediately to the Business Office. You will be charged a $10 replacement fee and issued a receipt for a new card. To get a new card, you will need to bring your receipt to the Auxiliary Services Office on the first floor of the Wilkins Building next to Public Relations. Your old card will be deactivated.

How do I care for my Hornet Card ?

Because new Hornet Cards are not issued each semester, you must treat yours with care. Do not punch holes in it. Do not bend it. Do not wash it. And do not let others use it ! If you lose your card or it does not work in the readers and appears to be abused, then you will be charged a replacement fee for a new one. DO NOT PUNCH HOLES IN YOUR CARD.

This information is subject to change.
