Symphonic Wind Ensemble

A resource for students, faculty and members of the community

SU Wind students

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble at Shenandoah Conservatory has been in existence since 1970. Performing at least four formal concerts each academic year, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble explores musical styles from the Renaissance to the 21st century. Programs feature a wide variety of instrumentation from delicate chamber pieces to pieces that suit a full symphonic ensemble. Compositions by such composers as Gabrieli, Bach, Mozart, Gounod, Shostakovich, Holst, Grainger, Sousa, Ives, and those writing for the medium today are performed. Additionally, guest composers and artists work with the ensemble in residence.

For outreach and performance opportunities, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble frequently tours throughout parts of the nation. Since 1987, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble performed several times at the Virginia Music Educators Association Conference, the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Carnegie Hall in New York City.

The Shenandoah Conservatory Symphonic Wind Ensemble is assisted by Kappa Kappa Psi, an honorary fraternity open to men and women enrolled in concert ensembles at the university.

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble is open to all musicians by audition. Auditions are held in the fall of each academic year. Click here for Fall Audition Information: scwindensemble.ning.com/. The Symphonic Wind Ensemble rehearses MWF 4-6 p.m. in Armstrong Concert Hall.
