The Bachelor of Music in Composition includes eight semesters of private composition study with established composers and eight semesters of applied instrumental or vocal studies with artist-teachers. Professional courses include instrumentation, arranging, music notation, form and analysis, 16th and 18th century counterpoint, electronic music and contemporary styles. Supporting professional coursework includes tonal and 20th century theory, aural skills, sight singing, keyboard harmony, music literature and history, conducting, symphonic and choral literature and eight semesters of ensemble participation.

Composition students also study a foreign language and fulfill the institution-wide General Education requirements including English, religion and philosophy, social and behavioral sciences, mathematics and lab sciences.
