Jena Root completed her composition Ph. D. at the University of Minnesota, where she worked under the direction of composer Judith Lang Zaimont. She has also attended the Fontainebleau School, Syracuse University (M. M. 1996), and the Conservatory at Shenandoah University (B.M. 1993). Her composition teachers have included Thomas Albert, Andrew Waggoner, Daniel Godfrey, and Dominick Argento. Although Ms. Root has composed for a wide variety of ensembles, her primary interests lie in vocal and choral music, and the music of historical women composers. Her doctoral dissertation, Children of Light, is a cantata based on the words and music of American women hymn writers of the nineteenth century, with particular attention to the work of Fanny J. Crosby. Dr. Root has conducted numerous creative workshops with elementary school children, and has received commissions from the Society for New Music, the St. Olaf Valhalla Band, and One Voice Mixed Chorus of the Twin Cities. In addition to composing, she has taught at Syracuse University, the University of Minnesota, and St. Olaf College. She is coordinator of Music Theory at Shenandoah University.
