Dance
Division Home
The Dance Division of Shenandoah Conservatory offers an "arts
intensive" approach to dance training with technique courses
in ballet, modern dance, jazz and tap. Classes are small, which
permits a great deal of individualized attention; each dancer is
placed in the appropriate level for maximum progress. Choreography
and performance receive strong emphasis, and dancers have many opportunities
each semester to present works created by both faculty and student
choreographers. Facilities include two large, air-conditioned
studios; video equipment within the department permits dancers to
record and analyze their work on a frequent basis, providing a valuable
tool in the creative process. All ballet and modern technique classes
feature live accompaniment. Masterclasses and workshops with visiting
guest artists are frequent, and opportunities to work with nationally
recognized choreographers are also available.
PROFESSIONAL
PREPARATION
Students
are trained to work as professionals through courses in theatre,
business and/or arts management.
All dance majors take courses in dance history, the dance sciences,
dance composition and dance production. Supportive coursework in
art, music, theatre and teaching is offered, providing a strong
foundation upon which to build artistic expression as well as a
scholarly awareness of dance as an art form. Shenandoahâs proximity
to Washington, DC and other major cultural centers provides many
opportunities to visit museums and exhibits that enrich the dancerâs
experience; students frequently attend performances by top-ranked
national and international dance companies.
