Certificate in Music Therapy

Music Therapy Home

The Certificate in Music Therapy is designed for persons who currently hold a bachelor's degree in music or a related field and wish to be gainfully employed as a music therapist with the credential "Music Therapist-Board Certified" (MT-BC). In addition to the completion of core music therapy courses, other courses may be required for internship eligibility at an AMTA approved site, based on review of the applicantās undergraduate degree transcripts, prior work related experience and skill-related needs.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's degree in music or a related field. Interview with the Director of Music Therapy.  An audition is required if the applicant's transcript does not show major applied study equivalent to AP** 212.

Students must register for all music therapy core courses at Shenandoah University. The student is expected to demonstrate proficiency in voice, piano, guitar and non-symphonic instruments internship. A listing of proficiency requirements is available from the Director of Music Therapy.

Music Courses
(Minimum 54 semester hours, to include the following):

  • 4 semesters of music theory, with competency equivalent to MUTC 201, 203 and 205.

  • 2 semesters of music history, with competency equivalent to MULT 201 and 202.

  • Major applied study (instrument or voice), with competency equivalent to AP**212.

  • 4 semesters of traditional ensemble experience.

Behavioral/Health/Natural Sciences Courses
(Minimum 19 semester hours, to include the following):

  • Abnormal Psychology, Anatomy/physiology, Exceptional Children

General Education Courses
(Minimum 27 semester hours)

General Electives Courses
(Minimum 6 semester hours)

Courses in the above categories may be transferred to Shenandoah University from a previously earned degree, or may be taken at university or college settings other than Shenandoah University, with approval of the Dean of the Conservatory.
