Dance Home

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance is designed for the highly-motivated, pre-professional dancer who is seeking a career as a concert performer, choreographer or dance educator.

This degree emphasizes choreography and performance, challenging each dancer to reach his/her fullest artistic potential. Students take a minimum of eight technique classes per week. An equal emphasis on ballet and modern dance is maintained throughout the four years of study. Additional training in jazz, tap and musical theatre styles complements this balanced approach, providing a strong and versatile background for today's multifaceted dancer. Whether the goal is to perform in a ballet or modern dance company, to dance on Broadway, work in film/video or be a dance teacher or choreographer, Shenandoah offers a superior foundation that will help to secure a future in any aspect of the dance profession.

Students complete a seven-semester sequence of improvisation and choreography courses. Seniors present a dance concert designed to showcase their skills as both dancers and choreographers. Dance science courses in anatomy, kinesiology and biomechanics are designed to enhance each dancer's understanding of how the art is created in the body. Injury prevention, proper nutrition and sound physical principles for teaching are emphasized.
