Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy
(Jazz Applied Music Concentration)

The Bachelor of Music Therapy curriculum prepares students for careers in which music is used to accomplish therapeutic aims, working with children and adults who require special services because of behavioral, learning, physical or psychological disabilities.  Following the awarding of the degree, including a six-month internship at a site approved by the American Music Therapy Association, students are eligible to sit for the national examination in music therapy administered by the Certification Board for Music Therapists. Upon passing the examination, the credential, Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC) is granted.

Advancement in the Bachelor of Music Therapy Curriculum
Academic, personal and music therapy screening requirements must be met prior to the enrollment in core music therapy courses at the 300 and 400 levels (except for MUTH 301). Specific requirements, procedures and necessary forms are available from the Director of Music Therapy and are included in the Music Therapy Program Handbook.

A student who has failed a required course in the area of Music/Behavioral/Health/National Sciences, or General Studies for a second time may not register for music therapy courses until a passing grade in the required course is earned.

A student who has failed any three field placement courses, including failure in the repeat(s) of any one field placement course, will be dismissed from the Music Therapy Program.

All required courses in Music Therapy, Music, Behavioral/Health/Natural Sciences, and General Studies at the 100 level must be completed before enrollment in the 300 level Music Therapy courses.

All required music courses at the 100 and 200 level must be completed before enrollment in the 400 level Music Therapy courses.

Music Therapy Degree-Equivalency Study at Shenandoah University is designed for persons who currently hold a bachelorās degree in music or a related field and wish to be gainfully employed as a music therapist with the credential,  Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC).  In addition to the completion of core music therapy courses, other courses may be required for internship eligibility at an AMTA approved site,  based on review of the applicantās undergraduate degree transcripts, prior work-related experience and skill-related needs.

Proficiency Examinations Competency demonstration in the areas of public speaking, piano, voice, guitar and percussive instruments is required prior to the start of internship.  Specific requirements and procedures are available from the Director of Music Therapy.
