Master of Music in Conducting

The Master of Music in Conducting curriculum is designed to develop conducting skills, score-reading, analysis, and interpretive skills. Students normally focus  in either instrumental or choral conducting.

Entrance Requirements  Applicants must possess a baccalaureate degree with a minimum grade point average of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) in music, or equivalent, prior to admission into the program. Conducting applicants must submit a videotape of approximately 20 minutes duration in which a minimum of two contrasting musical styles is presented. Alternatively, the applicant must make arrangements with the conductor of the appropriate Shenandoah ensemble and audition on campus. It may be necessary to conduct music in the current repertoire of the ensemble. 

Degree Requirements The degree requirement is 30 credit hours with grades of B or better in required courses and a grade point average of 3.0.

Students must complete MUPP 640 Graduate Performance Recital - (2 credits)  

Students will conduct fourty-five minutes of works representing the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary periods.  The concert may include a large chamber ensemble and/or full orchestra.  The instructor will assist in recruiting the performance group.  A committee of no fewer than three faculty will approve the final project a minimum of thirty  days prior to the public concert.
