Course Offerings
The Jazz Studies curriculum features several specialized courses
designed to augment the private lesson material and ensemble participation.
There are several commercial music courses that are also
required; they are described on the Music
Production and Recording Technology area of this site.

Jazz
Theory I |
|
A
course designed to equip the student with theory skills necessary
to successfully improvise in the jazz idiom.
Lead sheet notation, modes, and harmonic analysis are
emphasized, as well as an introduction to jazz style.

Theory II |
|
A
continuation of Jazz Theory I.
Focus is on advanced voicing and modal application, solo
analysis, and introductory jazz arranging.

A
study of the origin, development, styles, and major contributors
of jazz from the late 19th century to the present.
Extensive listening, reading, analysis, and student reports
are required. Three

small ensemble with the emphasis on the development of improvisational
skills. One credit. |

Repertoire Laboratory |

A
small ensemble dedicated to building a strong jazz repertoire,
with the emphasis on jazz
standards. One

Arranging and Composition |

A
basic course in arranging techniques, including jazz harmony,
melodic phrasing, contemporary chord symbolization, and terminology,
basic voicings for brass, reed, and rhythm section.
Final project involves writing for five horns and rhythm
section. Two credits. |

Advanced
Jazz Arranging and Composition |
|
Practical
arranging in jazz and rock idioms for big band, combos and special
ensembles. Idiomatic
uses of harmony, melodic figures, voicings, tonal colors modulations,
and notational conventions are developed.
Final project involves writing an entire big band arrangement
of at least five minutes.

Notation |
|
A
practical course in music notation, including correct practices
for instrumental, vocal and keyboard music in all combinations,
editing, proofreading, layout, and extractions of parts from
a score. Also
includes pencil/pen techniques (studio and publisher styles)
and computer music notation and printing.
Two credits.

Pedagogy
of Jazz Teaching Techniques |
|
Basic
skill development in pedagogic principles of analysis, listening,
literature, transcribing and conducting in the jazz idiom.
Course designed for music education as well as jazz
majors. One credit.
