Music Therapy Course Offerings

UNDERGRADUATE COURSE OFFERINGS

The undergraduate program includes 34 credits of professional courses in music therapy, including field placements and the six-month internship. The program is supported by music classes in tonal and twentieth-century harmony, aural skills, sightsinging, music literature and history, keyboard harmony, conducting, instrumentation and arranging, eight semesters of participation in a variety of ensembles, and continuing study in major and minor applied music areas.

The psychology component of the program includes general and abnormal psychology and psychology of the exceptional child, and electives. The program is further supported by studies in sociology or anthropology, religion or philosophy, mathematics, anatomy and physiology, English, and dance.

GRADUATE COURSE OFFERINGS

Seventeen credits of professional courses include four semesters of clinical applications and a choice of either a research/clinical project or a thesis. This core is supported by studies in bibliography and research, educational measurement, music electives, and electives chosen from the behavioral/health/natural sciences, education, or business. A comprehensive examination in music therapy caps the degree.

CERTIFICATE COURSE OFFERINGS

The certificate program is comprised of four components. The music therapy component includes a minimum of 34 credits of professional courses, all of which must be completed at Shenandoah University. The music component includes a minimum of 54 credits in music theory, history and literature, applied music and ensemble; these courses may be transferred from a previously earned degree, or may be taken at Shenandoah or another university or college, with the Conservatory Deanās approval. In the behavioral/health/natural sciences area, students must complete (or transfer) 19 credits, including coursework in abnormal psychology, anatomy and physiology, and psychology of exceptional children. A minimum of 35 credits of general education courses, including six credits of general electives, must be completed or transferred.
