CURRICULA
Students
in the Bachelor of Music Therapy
program take an applied major in the instrument/voice for which
they auditioned in either the classical
or Jazz
idiom, and minor in a secondary applied area as well. The curriculum
is well-grounded in musicianship, with over 60 credits in music
courses. Music remains the center of the studentsâ work, even as
therapeutic skills are learned through both theoretical training
and extensive practical experiences in the field. Those
students in the classical music concentration who wish to obtain the
highest level of performance may opt to pursue the Conservatory's
Performance
Certificate.
Students
are required to observe professional music therapists in their work
settings and lead classroom demonstrations of music therapy activities
prior to engaging in field experiences, which extend across 4 semesters
and precede the 6 month internship.
A
special advantage of the program at Shenandoah is the opportunity
to study applied music with a artist-teacher while earning a degree
as a music therapist. With careful management of electives students
can complete both the music therapy and music education degrees,
enabling them to work in public and private schools.
Students
enrolled in the Master
of Music Therapy program
must have completed all undergraduate music therapy degree requirements,
or their equivalent, as well as the music therapy internship, before
beginning the core music therapy courses at the graduate level.
By completing the Certificate
in Music Therapy,
those students who do not possess a Bachelor of Music Therapy degree
or its equivalent, may fulfill these requirements.
