Graduate Audition Requirements

Accompanying

  • Dance Accompanying Applicants: Ten minutes of music in contrasting styles. Applicant must demonstrate proficiency in sight-reading and/or improvisation, and may be asked to accompany a dance technique class.

  • Piano accompanying Applicants: One vocal and one instrumental accompaniment. Applicant should supply performers; please call the Admissions office in advance to make other arrangements. 

Composition
 

  • All Applicants: Submit at least two manuscripts in contrasting styles (with recordings of performances, if available).

Conducting
 

  • All applicants: Submit a face-to-the-camera video (VHS or DVD only) audition of at least ten minutes duration, conducting a rehearsal and/or performance (this recording must begin with you verbally identifying yourself; speak briefly about yourself and your musical background, and describe your goals in pursuing graduate study in conducting); and an audio recording (cassette or CD) of a representative concert; and a résumé with a repertoire list of actual works conducted. It is acceptable to use a smaller ensemble (e.g. string quartet and piano) performing a reduced version of a composition. 

Dance Choreography and Performance
 

  • All Applicants: Audition includes taking a technique class (ballet or modern dance), a video of original choreography, and a personal interview.

Music Performance (MM and DMA)
Music Pedagogy
Church Music (Organ or Voice only) 

  

  • All applicants: Prepare a program of 30 minutes of music in contrasting styles. Technique and/or sight-reading may be required.

Music Education (MME & DMA), Arts Administration
 

  • No audition required. (However, students wishing to study voice must audition for the voice faculty by performing ten minutes of music in contrasting styles.)
