One of the older collegiate jazz ensembles around is from Shenandoah University.
SU Jazz became a formally credited ensemble in the formative years of jazz education’s “Stage Band” movement,
shortly after the school’s move to Winchester, Virginia in the early 1960’s. The band counts among its
distinguished alumni the current arranger for the U.S. Air Force’s Airmen of Note, Alan Baylock; leader
of the Langley Air Force Band’s Rhythm in Blue, Pete Aiello; and pianist with the Army Jazz Ambassadors,
Tim Young. SU Jazz’s guest list of noted musicians includes Chuck Redd, Duffy Jackson, Marvin Stamm, Jon Faddis,
Randy Brecker, John Fedchock and Bob Mintzer
