Welcome to the School of Education and Human Development at Shenandoah University.  The SEHD offers a variety of programs and courses which serve to stimulate and expand your professional growth.  Study in these programs is student-centered and inquiry-driven, applied to the examination of the foundations, current situations, and future possibilities for education and related fields. Through courses, internships, and field research, students engage in the real world of teaching, learning and leading. All programs seek to produce graduates who will be knowledge-based competent decision-makers, prepared to be capable teachers and administrators, and effective classroom and institutional managers, and practitioners prepared to engage in educational improvement through an action research orientation.  Among the programs offered, you will find:

  •  Office of Education Outreach
    •  The Office of Education Outreach (formerly Continuing Education) offers professional courses which are accepted by the Virginia Department for teacher licensure.  OEO also offers a variety of re-certification courses.  Many of these courses are available in various settings in the area, including Fredericksburg, Winchester, and Leesburg.  The Office of Education Outreach is also able to offer individualized courses for districts that meet specific needs the district may have.  We are also able to offer a variety of courses for licensure or recertification in your school.  Tuition rates vary based on a variety of factors which we are happy to discuss with you. Districts may also contract with OEO to arrange sponsored sections; districts can request specific courses, enroll students, provide us with a list of enrolled students and our business office will bill districts directly.   •  Certificate Programs
    •  Professional Studies in Reading - The Professional Studies Certificate (PSC) for Licensure in Reading Specialist Concentration is designed for students who already hold a master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education and want to obtain Virginia licensure as a reading specialist without seeking Shenandoah’s MSEd: Reading Specialist Concentration. Students completing the requirements for the PSC Program in Reading Specialist Concentration will meet the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) approved program requirements for licensure. In addition to completion of the program, the VDOE also requires classroom teaching experience. The primary contact is Dr. Peter Edwards, Program Director - pedwards@su.edu - (540) 665-4588.

    •  Professional Studies Certificate for Licensure in Administration and Supervision serves students who already hold a master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education and want to obtain Virginia licensure in school administration and supervision without seeking Shenandoah’s MSED in Administration degree. Students completing the requirements for the PSC Program in Administration will meet the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) approved program requirements for licensure. In addition to completion of the program, the VDOE also requires classroom teaching experience and a passing score on the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA).  Larry W.     •   Professional Studies in Initial Teacher Licensure - this program offers the professional courses required by the Virginia Department of Education for licensure; up to 18 grad level professional courses are eligible for transfer into the Individualized Master's Program.  The program contact is Dr. Jurgen Combs (jcombs@su.edu)
    •  Professional Certificate (TESOL)  The Professional Certificate in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) provides an entry-level credential for persons who want academic training in the essential elements of the TESOL profession. The three courses in this nine-credit program provide an overview of the field, a basic grasp of English linguistics and a survey of important language teaching methods. All of the courses in the Professional Certificate program can be applied toward the requirements for the Advanced Professional Certificate in TESOL, the Add-on Endorsement in ESL, and the Master of Science in Education (TESOL Concentration). (This is NOT a licensure program. This program is NOT for those seeking the Add-on Endorsement in ESL.
    •  Advanced Professional Certificate (TESOL)  The Advanced Professional Certificate in TESOL is designed to prepare its graduates to teach English to speakers of other languages in any environment. This 18-credit program includes the courses in the Professional Certificate in TESOL (see description), adding coursework on language and culture, second language acquisition and language teaching materials and assessments.This program contains most of the substantive courses required for the Master of Science in Education (TESOL Concentration), and all of the Advanced Professional Certificate in TESOL courses can be applied toward that degree. (This is NOT a licensure program. This program is NOT for those seeking the Add-On Endorsement in ESL; see the Add-On Endorsement
    •   The Add-On Endorsement in ESL is designed for applicants who are seeking to add an ESL teaching endorsement to an existing K-12 teaching license. The curriculum covers the knowledge-base incorporated in the TESOL/NCATE standards for TESOL teacher education and is suitable preparation for the TESOL Praxis examination of the Educational Testing Service. This 18-credit program contains most of the substantive courses required for the Master of Science in Education (TESOL Concentration), and all of the Add-On Endorsement in ESL courses can be applied toward that degree. Applicants who meet the admission requirements for this program will, upon completing the program, qualify for the Virginia Add-on Endorsement in K-12 ESL (this is an approved program). This is the only program offered by Shenandoah University that is approved for the ESL Add-on Endorsement. This is NOT an initial licensure program.

  •  Master's Programs
    •  The Master of Science in Education - TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) degree is designed to prepare its graduates to teach English to speakers of other languages in any environment. This degree program incorporates the coursework included in the Advanced Professional Certificate and Add-on Endorsement programs (see descriptions) while adding other courses designed to develop leadership and research skills. Completion of this 33 credit hour degree program results in the highest academic credential that is normally held by professionals in this field. (This is NOT a licensure program. This program is NOT for those seeking the Add-on Endorsement in ESL.  Applicants who wish to earn both the endorsement and the master’s degree should first complete the endorsement program, then apply to the master’s program.)
    •  Master's of Science in Teaching - Individual Focus is designed to meet the needs of domestic and international students with interests in education outside the traditional American public school arena. It is flexible enough to adapt to individual needs, yet it maintains a consistency with other MSED programs through its research core requirements. Completion of the MSED: Individual Focus Concentration does not lead to state licensure, although students in Shenandoah University’s Professional Studies Certificate program may use their PSC coursework as their electives in the Individual Focus Concentration and with advising, continue on with the Research Core to complete the MSED degree. Graduates of this program could be qualified to serve as resource teachers, middle-level administrators, or generalists in the field. Degree Candidates work closely with an Advisor and may use electives to develop a broad view of education or may concentrate electives in a specific area of interest or endorsement needs.
    •  Master's in Educational Administration - The Master of Science in Education-Education Administration Concentration degree is designed to meet the current and changing administrative needs of school systems in the region. The program core includes courses with content that satisfies the competencies required by the Virginia Department of Education for the PK-12 Administration and Supervision license.  Larry W.     •  Master's in Reading - Professional Studies in Reading at Shenandoah University is committed to the preparation of caring, reflective professionals who view themselves as researchers of learning, and who can apply their academic training and pedagogical skills to the needs of a diverse society. The program is designed to prepare teachers who can connect theory to practice, and who create classroom and school communities where all students learn in meaningful ways. The program offers candidates a balanced preparation in the vitally important areas of assessment, reading instruction, literature, research, and the use of educational technology.     •  Doctoral Program -   Advanced Study in Organizational Leadership offers learners the opportunity to think deeply, examine critically, and understand theoretically challenges and problems facing educational and other public-sector organizations. The program is organized around a core of leadership and research courses (both theoretical and applied), complemented by courses in the learner’s concentration.  It is unique among doctoral programs in its focus on the relationship of theory to real world problems and learners’ lived experiences, emphasizing a student-centered, inquiry-driven, and problem-oriented approach to learning about organizations, leadership, and change.  We offer programming designed to meet the needs of those interested in nonprofit, public/private and higher education, or public- and service-sector leadership or who wish to explore servant leadership within their existing profession. 
      •  Organizational Leadership: Individualized Studies provides learners with insight on the application of organizational and leadership theory to organizations of public trust, broadens learners’ perspectives, and leads to a more comprehensive approach to ethical leadership and mission-driven organizations. (This includes standards for meeting Commonwealth of Virginia state licensure requirements in the area of Superintendent of Schools )
      •  Organizational Leadership: K-12 Administration (Administrative Leadership Track) - the degree will include standards for meeting Commonwealth of Virginia state licensure requirements in the area K-12 Principal and Supervisor of Instruction, incorporated as the learner’s area of concentration.
