Shenandoah University unveiled its vision for Winchester’s eastern gateway during a Winchester City Council work session on Oct. 15.
The design, by The Van Yahres Studio of BCWH Architects, creates a new gateway to Winchester City and rejuvenates the southern edge of the university’s campus. It takes into consideration the Shenandoah Valley heritage, including rolling topography, orchards, the Shenandoah River and the use of limestone as a common building material.
Five elements are highlighted in the design — the Winchester Entrance, Abrams Creek Dell, Corner Garden, Wetland Garden and Main Entrance.
Final choices for materials and landscaping have yet to be made, but the design presented to City Council provides a detailed representation of the gateway’s appearance.
