Undergraduate Secondary Education 6-12 Licensure

 Shenandoah University's Undergraduate Secondary Education Program is for students who want to teach academic subjects in grades 6-12. This Virginia Department of Education-approved program meets accreditation standards and is student-centered, inquiry-based and problem-oriented. All courses include a field component to fully integrate theory with current best practices. These five courses plus student teaching comprise a minor that can connect to the following majors for Virginia 6-12 Licensure:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • English
  • Mathematics
  • History/Social Studies

Students increase their career opportunities by choosing a minor in teacher education during their undergraduate programs. Increased demand for teachers has made teacher salaries more competitive, and scholarships and other financial aid are available for students in teacher education programs.

Students applying to teacher education programs in Virginia will have to pass state-mandated standardized tests such as Praxis and VCLA.

This program contains the professional studies required by the Virginia Department of Licensure Regulations for secondary education teachers and K-12 endorsements.  Students may elect to add this program as a minor to their current or completed major in a liberal arts field so that they could apply for a Virginia Teacher's license in that field.

*Teacher endorsement area requirements may be satisfied through transcript analysis by the Education Departmet faculty.  The outcome of this analysis may bepossible recommendations for supplementary corsework in order for students to acheive complicance with Virginia Department of Education regulations.
